Dani California NOT Similar to Mary Jane’s Last Dance
I know this has been an on going debate you’ve already heard about but I finally decided to listen to both songs carefully and have come the conclusion that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are in no way plagerists! If you don’t have both songs check out this mix which compares the two songs:

The mix is not very good at showing you both songs individually a while the author claims to let you decide whether they’re the same, I think he has definitely help the case for those in favor of the two songs being identical.
They’re not at all! First of all, there are countless songs that have the same chord progression. This is an acceptable practice. Most musicians take some pretty standard progression and then add a solo and mix it up a bit. Look at blues, very standard chord progressions!
Second, and this brings me back to the Vinilla Ice vs Queen contraversy, the guitar rhythm is completely different. Listen to it. RHCP use a 2-1 2-1 2-1 beat and Tom petty rocks out with the 2-1 1-1 2-1 1-1. I know that’s not the most musically sound explanation but you get the point.
In closing, Stadium Arcadium is a great album full of new material that is very reminisent of all their previous albums.
