r.refine: A Scallable Raster-to-TIN Simplification

Wednesday, September 20th, 2006

I presented my talk on scalable raster to TIN simplification at the FOSS4G2006 conference in Lausanne Switzerland on 9/19/2006. The talk covered my work with Prof. Laura Toma from my honors project at Bowdoin as well as work done the summer after graduating. You can download the pdf version of both the paper and the talk here:

Creating and ISO image on a Mac in OSX

Sunday, September 10th, 2006

Creating disk images on a mac is easy. If you have an older version of OS X you should see a program called Disk Copy in your Utilities folder. If you use OS X > 10.4 your Disk Utility will do the trick.

Just go to File > New and create an image of any volume on your computer. That’s the easy part.

Alaska to home in 7 days

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

No offense to the three people who live in northern Canada but it was very boring and gas was outrageously expensive so we made out of there as fast as we could. We spent 6 of the last 7 days driving solid; at least 14 hours a day. Took a quick layover in Bozeman Montana and then kicked ass to get home.

The trip has been amazing beyond words and very humbling. I’m currently trying to make a slideshow that will do the trip some justice.

I should be at home in Woodbury CT for most of the summer. From June 25th - 30th I’ll be a pole vault coach up at Bowdoin for the Dick Fosbury Track camp. Then with any luck I’ll be living in Salt Lake City with Jon Harris, Freeland Church and Tom Hazel; all three of my senior year roommates!

In alaska

Friday, June 2nd, 2006

Howdy,

I was trying to keep the blog updates about a week behind my actual progress to give me time to edit photos and such but once I got into alaska I stopped using the computer and now I’m far behind. We’ve since driven through vegas, climbed red rocks, climbed at Joshua tree, visited a friend in Sanata Monica, family in Santa Cruz, and another friend in San Fran. Then we went up to crater lake NP, Olympic NP, and Cascades NP. Then Seattle and hopped on the ferry in Bellingham. After 4 days on the water we ended up in Haines AK. We then went to Denali and hiked in the back country and saw over 15 grizzly bears, one about 800meters away while we were hiking :) Now we’re south of anchorage near Seward. We’re checking out some glaciers and probably going skiing tomorrow. We’ve got about another week out here in AK and then it’s going to be a LONG ride home. Hoping to be home by the 18-20th? I will get in touch with all you fine people as soon as I get home.

I have over a thousand photos and just as many stories to tell.
